The 3D Trick on Flat Paper

Try drawing a cube freehand right now. Most people's cubes look slightly wonky, with mismatched angles and sides that do not quite look equal. This happens because our brains struggle to turn flat paper into 3D space.

Isometric drawing solves this problem completely by using a fixed grid system. The word isometric literally means 'equal measure'. In an isometric drawing, all three visible faces of an object are drawn at the exact same scale.

Unlike some other styles where faces further away are drawn smaller to fake distance, isometric drawings keep every measurement true. This means a 5-centimetre edge at the back is drawn exactly as long as a 5-centimetre edge at the front.

How to Sketch a Perfect Isometric Cube
  1. Step 1

    Step 1: The Front Corner

    Draw a single, vertical line straight up at 90 degrees. This represents the closest front vertical edge of your cube.

    Step 2: The Bottom V-Shape

    From the bottom of your vertical line, draw two lines shooting up and out at 30 degrees to the left and right.

  3. Step 3

    Step 3: The Left and Right Walls

    Draw two vertical lines up from the outer ends of your bottom lines, making them the same height as your first line.

  4. Step 4

    Step 4: Connect the Top

    From the top of your middle vertical line, draw two lines at 30 degrees to meet the tops of the left and right walls.

  5. Step 5

    Step 5: Cap the Roof

    Draw two final parallel lines at 30 degrees to close the diamond-shaped top. You now have a perfect 3D cube!

The Magic Isometric Angles

The isometric grid itself is built from lines at exactly 30 degrees, 90 degrees, and 150 degrees from a flat horizontal baseline. This set of angles is what makes the drawing look 3D.

When drawing, vertical edges of your object are drawn as true vertical lines at 90 degrees. The other two sets of edges (the ones going left and right) are drawn along the 30-degree and 150-degree angled lines.

There are absolutely no horizontal lines in a finished isometric drawing! Any edge that would normally run flat left-to-right must climb up along one of the 30-degree slope lines instead.
