Think of Earth as a giant spinning top. It rotates on an imaginary line running right through the North and South Poles, which we call its axis. It takes exactly 24 hours to complete one full spin. This constant spinning is the reason we have day and night.
When your side of the Earth faces the Sun, you experience daytime. As the Earth keeps spinning, your location rotates away from the Sun, plunging you into the darkness of space—this is night-time. Because of this spin, it is always daytime somewhere on Earth while it is night-time somewhere else.

The Great Space Race
While spinning on its axis, Earth is also traveling along a giant path around the Sun. This yearly journey is called an orbit, or revolution. It takes Earth 365.25 days to complete one full lap.
Because we can't easily have a quarter of a day on our calendars, we round the year down to 365 days. Every four years, we add those four quarters together to make one extra day—February 29th. This is known as a Leap Year.
The Power of the Tilt
Many people think seasons happen because Earth gets closer to or further from the Sun. This is actually a myth! Earth's orbit is almost a perfect circle. The real secret behind seasons is Earth's tilt. Our planet doesn't stand straight up; it tilts at an angle of 23.5 degrees.
As Earth orbits the Sun, this tilt always points in the same direction. This means that for half of the year, the Southern Hemisphere (where New Zealand is) tilts toward the Sun. For the other half, it tilts away.
Concentrated Sunlight
When a hemisphere tilts toward the Sun, it receives highly concentrated, direct sunlight. The sun rays hit the ground at a steep angle, packing more heat energy into every square metre. This causes summer.
When that hemisphere tilts away from the Sun, the sunlight hits at a shallow angle. The same amount of light energy gets spread out over a much wider area, making it weaker and colder. This spread-out light is what gives us winter.
The Invisible Glue: Gravity
Why doesn't Earth just fly off into deep, dark space? The answer is gravity. Gravity is an invisible pulling force that exists between any two objects with mass. The larger an object is, the stronger its gravity.
Because the Sun is so unbelievably massive, its gravity pulls on the Earth, bending its path into a curved orbit. At the same time, Earth's gravity pulls on the Moon to keep it orbiting us, and it pulls on you so you don't float away into space.
