The Detective Work of History

History isn't just about reading dusty old diaries. In fact, humans have been around for about 300,000 years, but we only started writing things down about 5,000 years ago. That means a massive 98% of the human story is completely unwritten!

This is where archaeologists come in. They are like history detectives. Instead of reading books, they look at physical clues—bones, tools, ancient buildings, and even old rubbish. These clues are called artifacts, and they are the only way we can understand our deep past.

Golden Rubbish: What Middens Tell Us

To an archaeologist, ancient rubbish is absolute gold. Ancient rubbish heaps are called middens. When you throw away an apple core or an old plastic toy today, you are leaving a footprint of your life without realising it.

By digging up middens, archaeologists can work out exactly what ancient people ate, what tools they used, and even how wealthy they were. If a midden has lots of rare shells or fine animal bones, it tells a very different story than one with just basic scraps.

The Soil Layer Cake

How do we know which objects are older than others when they are buried? The earth acts like a giant layer cake. Over hundreds and thousands of years, dust, leaves, and mud build up to form layers of soil.

This leads to a simple rule called the Law of Superposition. Because new dirt always piles up on top of old dirt, the deeper layers are older, and the shallow layers are newer. By tracking these layers (a science called stratigraphy), archaeologists can put objects in a timeline from oldest to youngest.

The Carbon Clock

Soil layers are great for showing if an object is older or younger than another, but they cannot tell us the exact year. To get a real date, scientists turn to physics and use radiocarbon dating.

Every living thing—plants, animals, and humans—absorbs a tiny bit of radioactive carbon from the air while they are alive. The moment they die, this carbon stops being replaced and starts slowly disappearing (decaying) at a steady, known rate. It is like sand slowly draining out of an hourglass.

By measuring how much of this radioactive carbon is left, scientists can calculate almost exactly how many years ago the organism died.
