The Bold Idea

In 1947, a Norwegian explorer named Thor Heyerdahl had a controversial theory. He noticed that ancient South American stone statues looked quite similar to the famous stone statues found in Polynesia. This made him wonder: could the first Pacific islanders have sailed from South America, drifting across the ocean on strong water currents?

To test his hypothesis, Heyerdahl decided he could not just write about it in a library. He had to live it. He planned to build a raft using the exact same technology that would have been available thousands of years ago, and try to sail it from South America all the way to Polynesia.

The Dangerous Voyage of the Kon-Tiki

Heyerdahl and five companions traveled to Peru, where they built a raft named Kon-Tiki. They used nine giant balsa logs, held together only by hand-tied hemp ropes. They did not use a single metal nail, bolt, or screw. On April 28, 1947, they pushed off from Callao, Peru, and sailed into the open ocean.

The journey was genuinely terrifying. For 101 days, the crew faced massive storms that threatened to tear the logs apart. They had close encounters with hungry sharks and even had a massive whale shark swim directly underneath their fragile raft. After covering 6,900 kilometers, the raft finally crashed into a reef near Raroia in the Tuamotu Islands on August 7, 1947. Amazingly, all six crew members survived.
