How your body pulls off amazing moves, from sprinting to smiling

Did you know that every time you take a step, over 200 different muscles are working together in perfect harmony? Even when you are sitting perfectly still reading this, muscles are pumping blood through your body and helping you breathe. Let's look under the hood to see how these flesh-and-blood engines actually move us.

Words to own

Skeletal muscle
Muscles attached to your bones that you choose to move, like your biceps or quadriceps.
Involuntary muscle
Muscles that work automatically in the background without you thinking about it, like your stomach.
Antagonistic pair
A team of two muscles that work in opposite directions to move a joint, because muscles can only pull.
Cardiac muscle
The special, super-tough involuntary muscle that makes up your heart and never gets tired.
Micro-tears
Tiny, safe rips in your muscle fibers that happen during exercise, which heal to make the muscle stronger.
Tendons
Strong, stretchy bands of tissue that connect your muscles to your bones like anchors.

The Three Muscle Musketeers

Your body has over 600 muscles, but they are not all the same. Scientists group them into three different types based on what they do and how they look. Some you control with your mind, while others work quietly in the background without you ever noticing.

First, we have skeletal muscles, which are attached to your bones and let you run, jump, and wave. Second, there are smooth muscles inside your organs, like your stomach, which squeeze food along. Finally, there is cardiac muscle, a one-of-a-kind muscle found only in your heart that pumps blood 24/7.

Muscles can only pull, never push — so they work in antagonistic pairs. One contracts while its partner relaxes, then they swap to move the bone back.

The Golden Rule: Muscles Only Pull!

Here is a weird secret about muscles: they are like pieces of string. They can pull things together, but they can never push things away. When a muscle gets a signal from your brain, it contracts, which means it gets shorter, fatter, and tighter to pull on a bone.

Because they can only pull, muscles have to work in pairs to move your joints back and forth. When one muscle pulls to bend your arm, it needs a partner muscle on the other side to pull it straight again. This cooperative setup is what keeps your body moving smoothly.

Meet the Antagonistic Pairs

These muscle partnerships are called antagonistic pairs. The muscle that is contracting (getting shorter) is called the agonist, or prime mover. The muscle that is relaxing and stretching out is called the antagonist. They take turns doing the hard work.

Your arm has a famous pair: the biceps on the front and the triceps on the back. When you bend your elbow, your biceps contract and your triceps relax. To straighten your arm, the triceps contract and the biceps relax. Your legs have a similar team with your quadriceps on the front of your thigh and hamstrings on the back.

Your Muscle Map

Let's learn the names of the major muscles you use in Physical Education class. On your chest, you have the pectorals, which help you push things. Your shoulders are capped by the triangular deltoid muscles, which let you raise your arms. Down in your stomach area are the abdominals, which keep your core strong and help you sit up.

Moving down, your bottom consists of the gluteals, which are some of the strongest muscles in your body for running and jumping. Your thighs have the massive quadriceps on the front and the bendy hamstrings on the back. Finally, your calf muscle at the back of your lower leg is called the gastrocnemius, which helps you spring up on your tiptoes.

How Muscles Grow and Heal

Have you ever felt stiff and sore the day after a tough PE lesson or a sports match? This is completely normal and is called delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS. When you challenge your muscles, you actually make microscopic, tiny tears in the muscle fibers.

Don't worry, this is a good thing! Your body is amazing at repairing itself. When you rest and eat healthy food, your body fixes these tiny tears, making the muscle fibers slightly thicker and stronger than they were before. This is how you build strength over time.
