Grouping & Identifying Organisms

How scientists sort millions of living things to make sense of the natural world

Imagine walking into a supermarket where all the labels have been peeled off, and the cans are piled in one giant mountain. That is what nature would look like without taxonomy! Scientists have already found 1.5 million different species, and there could be up to a trillion more waiting to be discovered.

The Library of Life

Scientists estimate there could be anywhere from 8 million to over 1 trillion species on Earth, though we have only named about 1.5 million. To keep track of them all, we use taxonomy—a sorting system that groups living things based on their physical features and DNA.

Think of it like a massive library where books are organized by genre, author, and finally, title. This system prevents confusion across different countries and languages, giving every single species on Earth its own unique scientific name.

The Great Kingdom Split

At the very top level, we sort living things into massive groups called kingdoms. The Animal Kingdom contains multicellular creatures that move around and eat other things. The Plant Kingdom includes multicellular organisms that make their own food using sunlight in a process called photosynthesis.

The Fungi Kingdom, which includes mushrooms and moulds, gets nutrients by absorbing them from their surroundings instead of photosynthesising. Microorganisms are single-celled life forms like bacteria, forming their own microscopic kingdoms.

Vertebrates vs. Invertebrates

Within the Animal Kingdom, the first major division is based on a single structural feature: a backbone. Animals with a backbone are called vertebrates. Animals without a backbone are called invertebrates.

While vertebrates like dogs, eagles, and sharks are very famous, invertebrates (like insects, spiders, crabs, and jellyfish) actually make up about 95% of all animal species on Earth! They keep our ecosystems alive by pollinating plants and recycling nutrients.

The Five Vertebrate Families

Vertebrates are split into five main classes based on how they breathe, reproduce, and protect their bodies. Mammals have hair or fur and feed milk to their young. Birds have feathers and lay hard-shelled eggs.

Reptiles have dry, scaly skin and lay leathery eggs. Amphibians have moist skin, breathing through it as well as lungs, and live in both water and on land. Fish live entirely underwater and breathe using specialized gills.

The Rule-Breakers of the Animal Kingdom

Sometimes, nature throws us a curveball. A bat flies like a bird, but it has fur and feeds its babies milk—so it is classified as a mammal. A whale lives fully in the ocean like a fish, but it breathes air with lungs, has tiny hairs, and feeds its young milk, making it a mammal too.

The strangest is the platypus, which lays leathery eggs like a reptile but has fur and produces milk, firmly placing it in the mammal group. These tricky examples prove that classification relies on a combination of features, not just one single trait.

This is why animals like whales and bats — which don't look like typical land mammals — are still classified as mammals, while animals like birds or fish, despite sometimes superficially resembling mammals in behaviour, are not, because they lack these two defining features.
