The Big Three: Meet the Microbes
There are three main types of microorganisms you need to know. First are bacteria. These are single-celled living things. Some can cause a sore throat, but others live happily in your gut helping you digest dinner, or in the soil recycling nutrients.
Second are viruses. These are much smaller than bacteria and aren't technically alive because they cannot reproduce on their own. They must hijack a living cell (called a host cell) to make copies of themselves. This is why viruses cause colds and flu.
Third are fungi. This group includes mushrooms, yeasts, and moulds. Instead of making their own food like plants do, they absorb nutrients from whatever they are growing on.
Nature's Master Recyclers
What happens when a leaf falls off a tree in the forest? It doesn't stay there forever. Fungi and bacteria act as nature's clean-up crew, known as decomposers.
They break down dead plants and animals, feeding on them and releasing valuable nutrients back into the soil. Without these decomposers, dead material would pile up forever, and the soil would run out of nutrients to grow new trees.
Microbes on Your Dinner Plate
Humans have been using microbes to prepare food for thousands of years, even before we knew they existed! When you eat yogurt, you are eating milk that has been fermented (thickened and soured) by friendly bacteria.
When you eat a fluffy slice of bread, you have yeast (a fungus) to thank. As yeast feeds on sugar in the dough, it releases bubbles of carbon dioxide gas. These bubbles get trapped, making the dough puff up and rise before it is baked.
